Development Engineer

About the Position
Based in West Lothian, Kaiam is an emerging market leader in the research, development and manufacturing of optoelectronic equipment used within data-communication centres and the telecommunications industry. Founded by leading technologists from the optical networking industry, the team has a track record of delivering breakthrough approaches that change the rules of the marketplace.

 

In this role, based in Livingston, you will be responsible for the development and validation of new ideas. Apart from research, modelling and design of new approaches in our photonic light circuits, you will be spending time in the R&D lab where ideas are tested for our integrated photonic products. The role will report into the optics design team manager.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

 

You will take initiative and responsibility for development tasks in the research projects in the optics design team. Most of these programs are aimed at the next generation products. As a company we build transceivers using our internal photonic engines. Kaiam is continuously improving the quality and manufacturability of the optical engines, with a short term focus on (wafer-level) test and assembly automation. Our current products are deployed in hyper cloud data centers and carry 100Gb/s, 25Gb/s per laser. With each laser having its own wavelength. The four wavelengths are muxed onto a single fiber using the plc mux. Future products will carry more data, and will mux more lasers to achieve 400Gb/s combined capacity next.

 

Another active program is where Kaiam products address the requirements for the next generation mobile networks, indicated as 5G. These products operate in antenna base stations which require specific features, like wide operating temperatures, low loss, and stringent temperature stability. You will be investigating different material systems and design options to develop products that achieve these 5G requirements with long-term reliability.

 

Essential Requirements:

• PhD Degree in Chemistry, Physics or Electronics
• Familiarity with Optics
• Previous hands-on experience and programming for test equipment

PCB Designer

About the Position

In this role, based in Livingston, you will be responsible for designing the dense PCB assembly within high speed optoelectronic transceivers. This will consist of design, development and prototyping leading edge products, and ultimately seeing them through to successful mass manufacture as part of the wider team. In addition, you will be responsible for custom in-house PCBs to support manufacture and test requirements.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:
•  Design high speed, multilayer PCBs for optical transceivers
• Offer design for manufacture advice at all stages of development
• Carry out schematic capture alongside engineers
• Perform post processing and Gerber generation
• Maintain component library
• Liaise with PCB manufacturers and PCB Assembly companies

 

Essential requirements:

•  Qualification in Electrical Engineering (and data communications experience desirable)

Process Engineering Manager

To support our continued growth, we are recruiting for a Process Engineering Manager, reporting to the VP of Engineering. In this hands-on role, based in Livingston, you will be working on managing a team of manufacturing process engineers, spending a significant amount of your time within the ‘cleanroom’ environment. You will also be supporting the day to day engineering issues to help production reach the required output while maintaining a high yield.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:
• Manage a team of manufacturing process engineers
• Coordinate resolution for day to day issues with production
• Manage projects for yield improvement, cost reduction
• Manage projects that will gear towards process flow automation
• Support product and process development for new products
• Present RCA and projects to the management
• Monitor, react and maintain SPC parameters

We are now recruiting for a Quality Engineer. Supporting the Quality Manager, your role will include but not be limited to:-

 

• Working with the engineering team to test, diagnose and identify cause of failure
• Writing and sharing reports with the engineering team, sales team and production team
• Monitoring and assessing the success of the corrective and preventative actions and creating 8D summary reports to supply to the customers
• Providing weekly status reports to management
• Keeping all databases and files accurately updated
• Participating in and supporting product and process continuous improvement activities based on a range of tools and techniques
• Undertaking other QA tasks within the scope of your expertise as required, (which may include supporting the internal audit program, documentation, calibration, ESD audits……)

Duties & Responsibilities:
•  3D simulation of high frequency optoelectronic packages
• Simulation of gigabit link performance
• Design of high speed, multilayer PCBs
• Characterisation of optoelectronic devices

• Assist with design of automated RF characterisation rigs

 

Essential requirements:

•  BSc/MSc and/or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics or related field

Wafer Fab MEMS Process Engineer

About the Position

To support our continued growth, we are recruiting for a Wafer Fab MEMS Process Engineer, reporting to the Optical Device Engineering Manager. The MEMS Product and Process Engineer is responsible for the quality, yield, cost, performance and reliability of MEMS wafer products produced within the Kaiam Wafer Fabrication plant in Livingston, Scotland.
The primary purpose is to manage the MEMS wafer products (Product Engineering) and control and improve the Processing and Manufacturing methods (Process Engineering) used to produce them.

 

Responsibility for New Product Introduction is also part of this varied and forward-looking role, taking new MEMS and Planar Light Circuit (PLC) products from initial concept through to their transfer to the Production Department. This involves developing the processes, methods and documentation to allow this to happen.

 

The role serves as a link between the Design team and the Wafer Fab Process Engineering team to facilitate New Product Introduction into the Wafer Fab. As such the Product & Process Engineer shall work closely with both groups to achieve their objectives.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Control the quality of the MEMS product lines by providing the systems and safeguards that prevent manufacturing out of specification product

• Responsible for overall MEMS products wafer and die yields

• Maintain product specifications and responsible for Product Data Sheets of MEMS product lines, responsible for tracking changes and reflecting these changes in the product control documentation

• Ensure wafer process flows are defined for each product, that the documentation is up to date and correct and that the processes are available and correct on the MES system

• Introduce new products into the Fab, setting up documentation, product flows, tracking systems, inspections and data capture methods

• Pilot processing of new products to test the capability of the manufacturing process to allow the transition of manufacturing responsibility to Production

• Interact with external vendors and service suppliers. Set up new processes and services by evaluating the performance and adopting them as required

• Support and liaise with the PLC Wafer Fab Process Engineers to integrate MEMS products into the existing process modules

• Analyse manufacturing data, report on yields and determine root causes for main yield detractors, driving improvement projects to maximise performance

• Lead improvement projects to develop the process or methods for die yield, quality, throughput, cost reduction or safety gains

• Continuously control the MEMS processes (Plating, Wet Etch, Sputter, PECVD) and associated measurement equipment, to ensure that product is of the highest quality and output efficiently

• Manage out of specification processes and the disposition of non-conforming product through an NCR based system

• Provide guidance and assistance to Operators in their day to day running

• Perform technical tests and experiments for process development, preparing records, charts and graphs of results for presentation

• Liaise with Design, Process, Die Test and Assembly Engineers to achieve objectives

 

Essential Requirements:

• Being a self-starter is an absolute must for this position as much of the role is to drive projects forward without having to be told what to do next. Any prospective candidate must be able to provide evidence of having worked in such a style
• Experience and knowledge of wafer processing techniques (photolithography, etch, PECVD, Sputter etc.) is essential as is working in a Wafer Fabrication facility
• Education — Degree or equivalent in material science, physics, chemistry, engineering or similar
• Positive can-do attitude a necessity

 

Desirable:

• Knowledge of MEMS manufacturing techniques is desirable
• Excellent problem-solving ability; working knowledge of problem solving techniques and best practices such as Six Sigma is desired
• Team player, able to provide leadership to others and work under their own initiative
• Strong organisational and project management skills
